What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of health and healing based on the principal of “like cures like”. The word homeopathy itself means “like disease”. The theory of homeopathy is not new. It originally goes back to Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.) who was considered the Greek Father of Medicine. Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy (1755- 1843) took Hippocrates principle “whenever a doctor cannot do good, he must be kept from doing harm” to heart in his discovery of homeopathy. Over time he found this powerful but gentle modality when used correctly was a great stimulus to the human system; which again follows another of Hippocrates principles that “natural forces within us are the healers of disease”.
Homeopathic remedies are made of natural substances. There are more than 3000 remedies approved by the FDA in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia. Some of these are plants, trees, minerals, salts, and animal substances. All begin to show a symptom picture after going through what homeopaths call a “proving”. Provings begin to show us each remedies efficacy, and what it can be utilized for.
Remedies are chosen based on a physical symptom pattern as well as an emotional and mental symptom pattern. General patterns of sleep and food cravings are also looked at when choosing remedies for a person.
Three main principles guide homeopaths.
- Like Cures Like: As stated above this principle underlies a remedy choice. If a remedy has the potential to cause nausea and vomiting, it has the potential to cure it. If it causes left sided joint pain, again, it’s a remedy that can help that symptom in the body. Symptoms produced by remedies are gathered and collated in a homeopathic repertory and a cross section analysis can help to narrow down a choice.
- The Minimum Dose: In Hahnemann’s eagerness to “do no harm” he experimented with the dilution factor of the remedy. He was not interested in poisoning anyone with the remedies he was collecting, and endeavored to experiment with how much could a substance be diluted and still be efficacious. Through this experimentation he found remarkable insights. He noted that often a more dilute remedy brought about more significant results.
- The Single Remedy; Most classically trained homeopaths will give one remedy at a time. The idea is to give the body one impulse towards healing, not bombard it with many different substances at a time. The remedy is matched to the symptom picture that the client presents.
